Texas State Aquarium Celebrates Caribbean Journey Grand Opening

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – Today, Saturday, May 13, the Texas State Aquarium is celebrating the Grand Opening of Caribbean Journey. At 71,000 square feet, Caribbean Journey more than doubles the Aquarium’s indoor exhibit space, guiding guests on an adventure through tropical forests, coastal lagoons, and coral reefs to encounter sharks, flamingos, bats, tropical fish, and other exotic species.

Through its new exhibits and presentations, Caribbean Journey inspires and educates guests and furthers the Aquarium’s mission to engage people with animals, inspire conservation for our seas, and support wildlife conservation. Caribbean Journey also puts the Aquarium in position to become a global leader in fostering support for the conservation of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.

The Caribbean Journey Grand Opening event features several activities and ceremonies to mark this momentous occasion. The day will start with an opening ceremony that includes speeches from CEO Tom Schmid and members of the Board of Trustees, as well as a special recorded message from Texas Governor Greg Abbott. A ribbon cutting ceremony will then be held before the doors open to the public. The Grand Opening event will also feature music from several live bands, a scavenger hunt, a prize giveaway, and other fun activities.

“We’re so excited to finally welcome our guests to a Caribbean Journey,” said Schmid. “Caribbean Journey is a project with more than 30 years in the making and thanks to the vision of our founders, the support of our guests and the generous contributions of our donors, this magnificent project is now a reality.”

Caribbean Journey will be open from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 13 and Grand Opening celebrations will be held throughout the day. The Aquarium will also be open on Sunday during its regular hours of 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
