CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – Texas State Aquarium President & CEO Tom Schmid has been elected the Chair of the Board of Directors for the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of zoos and aquariums in the areas of conservation, education, science, and recreation. Schmid was installed as AZA Chair during a luncheon on Wednesday, September 12, at the organization’s annual conference held in Phoenix, Arizona.
According to AZA President & CEO Jim Maddy, “Due to Tom’s strong leadership and extensive experience, AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums are sure to benefit immensely.”
Schmid joined the Texas State Aquarium in 1996 and has held the position of President & CEO since 1999.
Schmid also serves on the National Coastal America Learning Center Executive Committee. He has held many other positions locally, including Chair of the Board of the Corpus Christi Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Texas Tourism Industry Association Attractions Council steering committee, the board of the American Diabetes Association, and the Executive Committee of FutureBridge, a program affiliated with the Corpus Christi Regional Economic Development Corporation.
Schmid was named AZA Inspector of the Year in 2011 and has been involved in the AZA for over a decade. With over 6,000 aquarium and zoo professionals and over 220 accredited zoological institutions in North America, South America and Asia, the AZA is the leading professional association for zoos and aquariums.
